Around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, police arrested faculty member Frank Rybicki, 55, for assaulting Krista Bowman, 22, a student in his class.
A campus police report shows the incident happened in the Mass Media Building on March 25.
Students say Rybicki closed a laptop computer on Bowman’s hands after arguing with her about visiting websites unrelated to his Law & Ethics of Media class.
“I would not want to lose a great teacher because [of] what he brings to the department and just pretty much he’s great and wonderful and he’s a great teacher,” said Matt Thompson, a student in the class, who witnessed the incident.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office says Rybicki bonded out of jail Wednesday on $2,500.
Valdosta State issued the following statement about the incident:
The university is investigating an incident involving a faculty member and this matter will be processed through the appropriate legal channels. In terms of class instruction, modifications have been made.
All employees are expected to perform their obligations and responsibilities in a professional manner. Additionally, employees are governed by the policies and procedures of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and Valdosta State University.
